The Illuminati, historically, refers to a secret society founded in 1776 in Bavaria by Adam Weishaupt. This original group, known as the Bavarian Illuminati, sought to promote Enlightenment ideals such as reason, secularism, and the reduction of religious influence over state affairs. The organization was outlawed and dissolved in the late 18th century, but the term "Illuminati" has since been associated with various conspiracy theories that claim the existence of a secret elite group controlling world affairs.
